Travelling To Chiang Mai

Travelling To Chiang Mai - Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a city rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Established in 1296 as the capital of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, it remained an elusive destination until the 20th century, accessible only by arduous journeys. Today, reaching Chiang Mai is straightforward, with modern transport links making it easier than ever to experience this enchanting city.

At Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai, we invite you to explore this captivating destination with us as your guide.

Arriving in Chiang Mai by Air

Flying into Chiang Mai is the quickest and most convenient option, with direct flights connecting the city to numerous domestic and international locations.

Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is just a short drive from the city centre, making it an excellent gateway. The airport is modern, offering facilities such as currency exchange counters, ATMs, restaurants, and duty-free shops.

Airlines such as Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, and Thai Airways provide seamless connections for international visitors. If you’re travelling domestically, flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai are frequent and take approximately 75 minutes. With two airports in Bangkok—Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK)—you have a range of carriers to choose from, including budget-friendly options like Thai AirAsia and Nok Air.

Travel Tip: Book flights well in advance, particularly during peak seasons, to secure the best fares and preferred flight times.

Exploring Scenic Routes by Train

Consider travelling by train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for a more leisurely journey. The scenic route takes 14 to 16 hours and winds through lush landscapes, verdant forests, and mountains. Opt for an overnight sleeper train to rest comfortably en route or travel by day to admire the panoramic views.

First-class sleeper cabins offer privacy and air conditioning, while second-class options are also comfortable and ideal for budget-conscious travellers. Meals and snacks are available onboard, though bringing your treats can be a convenient alternative.

Chiang Mai Railway Station, located about 3km from the city centre, is well-connected to local transport options, including songthaews (shared taxis) that can bring you directly to Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai.

Travelling by Bus

Buses provide another affordable way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. VIP buses are particularly comfortable, offering air conditioning, spacious seating, and onboard amenities. The journey typically takes about 12 hours and departs from Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal, Mo Chit 2.

Chiang Mai’s main bus station, the Arcade Bus Station, features ticket counters, food vendors, and Wi-Fi facilities. Local transport options, including songthaews and taxis, can take you to your final destination from here.

Local Transport in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a city best explored at your own pace, with various local transport options to suit different preferences.

Songthaews: These red pick-up trucks with covered seating in the back function as shared taxis. Affordable and widely available, they are a quintessential part of Chiang Mai’s transport network. Hail one from the roadside, confirm your destination and fare and hop on.

Taxis: While less common than songthaews, taxis offer a more private mode of transport. They are handy for airport transfers and pre-arranged journeys.

Car Hire: For those looking to venture further afield, hiring a car is an excellent way to explore Chiang Mai’s surrounding countryside. Roads leading to attractions such as Doi Inthanon National Park and the Mae Sa Valley are well-maintained and easily navigable.
