Two neighbours, one coastline
Hua Hin is Thailand’s original beach resort town — a royal seaside retreat since the 1920s — with night markets, hospitals, famous golf courses and a busy centre. Pranburi is the coastal district immediately south: fishing villages, pineapple farms, long beaches and two national parks, with resorts spread thinly along the shore.
Getting to either is much the same journey. From Bangkok, allow around two and a half to three hours by car to Hua Hin, then roughly 30–45 minutes more to the Pranburi beaches. Arrival in Pranburi feels noticeably different: the traffic thins, the buildings drop away, and the coast opens up.
The beaches, compared
Hua Hin’s town beach is long and sociable. Expect deckchairs, pony rides, jet skis near the pier and easy access to cafés — with the crowds that come with all of it, especially at weekends when Bangkok arrives.
Pranburi’s beaches are longer, emptier and largely undeveloped. Pak Nam Pran curves south from a working fishing village; Khao Kalok sits beneath a landmark limestone headland; Dolphin Bay looks out to offshore islands. On a weekday morning you can walk for half an hour and count the other people on one hand.
Sand and sea are similar on both — fine sand and calm, shallow Gulf water for most of the year. The real difference is what stands behind the beach: a town in Hua Hin; casuarina trees and quiet roads in Pranburi.
Evenings and eating
Hua Hin wins on choice. The Cicada and Tamarind night markets, the old fishing-pier seafood restaurants, international dining and live music give you a different evening every night of the week.
Pranburi’s evenings are simpler — and, for many guests, the point. Fresh seafood at Pak Nam Pran fishing village, a handful of local restaurants, and dinner facing the sea at your resort. This is a coast for eating well and sleeping early.
Days out
Pranburi is the better base for nature. Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park — home to Phraya Nakhon Cave and Thailand’s largest freshwater marsh — is 30–40 minutes south. Kuiburi National Park, one of Thailand’s most reliable places to see wild elephants, is under an hour inland. Closer still are the Pranburi Forest Park mangrove boardwalks and flat cycling routes through pineapple country.
Hua Hin is the better base for golf, palaces and family attractions: Maruekhathaiyawan Palace, the century-old railway station, water parks and several of Thailand’s best-known golf courses. All of it stays within easy day-trip reach of Pranburi.
Who should choose which
Choose Hua Hin if you want restaurants and nightlife within walking distance, are travelling with teenagers who need entertainment on tap, or plan to play golf most days.
Choose Pranburi if you want rest: quiet beaches, early nights, morning yoga and national parks — or if you have already done Thailand’s busier coasts and want the version that still feels local. It is also the natural choice for a wellness stay; the pace of the district does half the work before any treatment begins.
The case for doing both
You do not have to choose absolutely. From Pranburi, Hua Hin’s night markets are an easy 40-minute drive for an evening out; from Hua Hin, Pranburi’s parks and beaches make an unhurried day trip.
