Loy Krathong “Festival of Lights” in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai's Loy Krathong “Festival of Lights” - Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai transforms into a dazzling spectacle of light and culture every November during the enchanting Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festivals. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” this celebration offers an unforgettable experience as the city comes alive with floating krathongs on rivers and glowing lanterns ascending into the night sky. At Aleenta Retreat Chiang Mai, we invite you to immerse yourself in this mesmerising event while discovering the traditions and beauty of Northern Thailand.

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong, meaning “to float a basket,” has deep spiritual and cultural significance in Thailand. It is traditionally celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. It is a time to thank the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha and symbolically release bad luck and misdeeds by floating beautifully crafted krathongs down rivers and waterways.

The festival’s roots blend Buddhist, Hindu, and local folklore, making it a rich tapestry of beliefs and traditions. With its dual celebration of Loy Krathong and the northern Yi Peng festival, Chiang Mai offers a unique and magical twist on this national holiday.

Yi Peng
The Lantern Festival

Yi Peng, exclusive to Northern Thailand, coincides with Loy Krathong and features the release of thousands of glowing lanterns (khom loy) into the night sky. Releasing these lanterns symbolises letting go of misfortune and sending wishes for a brighter future.

In Chiang Mai, the two festivals beautifully merge, creating a city illuminated by candlelight, lanterns, and floating krathongs. This awe-inspiring sight draws visitors from around the world.

Celebrating Loy Krathong and Yi Peng in Chiang Mai

  • Floating Krathongs

Krathongs, crafted from banana leaves and adorned with flowers, candles, and incense, are floated on the Ping River and surrounding waterways. Many locals and visitors make their krathongs, adding personal touches such as hair strands or coins as symbolic offerings.

  • Sky Lanterns

Lantern releases are most famously observed at events like the mass lantern launch near Mae Jo University. The city’s popular spots for lantern releases include Tha Phae Gate, Nawarat Bridge, and temple grounds.

  • Parades and Cultural Events

Chiang Mai hosts a lively parade featuring intricately decorated floats, traditional Lanna music, and dance performances. Temples also hold ceremonies, inviting visitors to experience the spiritual essence of the festival.

  • Workshops and Activities

Throughout the festival, workshops are available where you can learn to craft your krathong or lantern, adding a personal touch to the celebration.

Tips for Enjoying the Festival

  • Arrive Early: Popular spots like Tha Phae Gate and the Ping River fill up quickly.
  • Dress Modestly: Respect local customs, especially if attending temple ceremonies.
  • Be Mindful of the Environment: Opt for biodegradable krathongs and lanterns to minimise environmental impact.
