Exploring Khao Tao in Hua Hin

Exploring Khao Tao in Hua Hin - Aleenta Hua Hin Resort & Spa

Just south of Hua Hin lies the peaceful seaside village of Khao Tao, a destination rich in charm, cultural heritage, and natural beauty. Often overlooked in favour of larger beach towns, Khao Tao has quietly retained its identity as a place of simple pleasures and deep tradition. From quiet beaches to a hilltop temple with breathtaking views, it’s a lovely day out for guests of Aleenta Hua Hin – Pranburi Resort & Spa, looking to experience a different pace of coastal life.

Khao Tao in Hua Hin

Khao Tao is located just under 20 minutes from central Hua Hin and around 25 minutes from Aleenta. The journey is easy by car, and we often recommend hiring a local taxi or driver for the day. This allows you to explore at your own pace without having to wait for public transport, which can be infrequent in this quieter area. Whether you set off early in the morning or head over after a leisurely breakfast, Khao Tao feels a world away from the busy streets of town.

A Place Named After Turtles

The name “Khao Tao” translates to “Turtle Hill”, a reference to the native turtles that once thrived in the region. You may still spot artistic nods to these creatures around the temple, but it is the gentle, unhurried nature of the village that continues to reflect the spirit of its name. This is a place where locals linger over long lunches, and visitors are encouraged to slow down and take in the view.

Wat Tham Khao Tao Temple

No visit is complete without walking up the hillside to Wat Tham Khao Tao. This sprawling temple complex offers a peaceful space to explore, with shaded paths, intricate shrines and quiet corners carved into the rock. A blend of Thai and Chinese influences is evident throughout, from statues of mythical figures to shrines dedicated to revered deities.

As you climb higher, the views become more impressive. From the summit, a large golden seated Buddha looks out over the Gulf of Thailand, with Hua Hin faintly visible in the distance. A standing Buddha rests on the lower level, while smaller figures can be found tucked into natural alcoves along the route. It is worth taking your time here, pausing not just for the views but for the breeze that drifts in from the sea.

For those not keen on the whole climb, a shaded sala is located next to the turtle shrine at the base of the hill, offering a lovely spot to rest and listen to the waves.

Beaches of Khao Tao

Khao Tao is blessed with two main beaches, each with its personality. Hat Sai Noi, or the small sand beach, is a sheltered bay often favoured by local families. Its gentle waves and soft sand make it ideal for swimming or simply watching the tide come and go. A short walk away is Hat Sai Yai, the larger beach, which is often quiet on weekdays but attracts more visitors at weekends.

Both beaches are framed by the natural curve of the headland and the surrounding hills, giving them a private, tucked-away feel. Nearby restaurants serve fresh seafood, often caught the same day by the village’s fishing boats. It is the sort of place where a simple grilled fish with steamed rice feels just right.

The Freshwater Lake and Royal Project

Just inland from the coast is the Khao Tao Reservoir, a peaceful lake developed under a Royal Project initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It was Thailand’s first reservoir of its kind and continues to play an essential role in supporting local agriculture and freshwater supply.

The walking paths around the lake are quiet and scenic, lined with trees and occasional benches where you can stop and take in the view. It is a lovely place for a stroll, particularly in the early morning or just before sunset.

Life in the Village

Baan Khao Tao, the village at the heart of this area, is a working community where fishing, farming and hospitality come together in quiet harmony. The tides and seasons shape the rhythm of daily life. You might pass monks collecting alms in the morning, or see fishing boats unloading their catch by the shore.

For those interested in food, there are numerous small, family-run restaurants serving authentic Thai dishes with a local twist. From spicy seafood salads to comforting bowls of rice soup, the food here is simple, fresh and full of flavour.

A Calmer Coastal Escape

Khao Tao stands apart from more commercial Hua Hin beach destinations. There are no towering hotels or crowded streets. Instead, you will find temples built into hillsides, narrow roads shaded by coconut palms and views that open out to a vast, endless sea.

It is this gentle balance of nature, culture and local life that makes Khao Tao such a rewarding place to explore. Whether you come for the morning or stay for the sunset, the memories made here tend to linger long after you return.
